Thoughts at Sunset

There is a quiet confidence everywhere here. Doors and windows and cars are left unlocked. Purses and cameras and phones are left on chairs and beach towels and hooked over railings. Skyrians know each other. They know each other by name, by occupation, by flat location. They address letters and postage with a name and a village- no house number or street needed. The foreignness of the trust people have in each other radiates through me and I cringe away from the comfort and safety I feel in this village. It saddens me that trust is something rarely found in America- never would I leave my bag unattended, my door unlocked, my windows open...

But I will hopefully work into the rhythm of familiarity here, learn faces, and begin to trust that people and strangers, as a whole, are capable of caring for each other.
